From extreme weather to droughts, climate-related impacts are changing how community colleges and universities are adapting their campuses and working with their surrounding communities. A surge of focus around resilience is spurring new leadership, innovation, and action. Higher education has an important role to play as a workforce developer, community educator, and convener, and should be central to designing a coherent and sustainable local response to these threats and opportunities. This webinar will provide guidance and recommendations on engaging the community, planning resilience strategies, developing curricula and research, and will showcase best practices from colleges already paving the way to resiliency.

Presenters:

  • Dr. Anne Waple, Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer, Second Nature
  • Todd Cohen, Director of the American Association of Community College’s SEED Center
  • Sarah White, Senior Associate, COWS, University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • Dr. David Ralston, Faculty, Merritt College & Community Engagement Manager, Bay Area Air Quality Management District

Cohen and White are coauthors of SEED's new report: A Guide to Climate Resiliency & The Community College.

The Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN) is a network of 48 Illinois community colleges working together to grow the state’s green economy. By leveraging a TAACCCT grant, 17 of those colleges formed a consortium that created 32 certificate and degree programs and over 180 online or hybrid courses within industry clusters like architecture, STEM, manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation. Each includes core sustainability-related outcomes and was developed in a coordinated way across the state system. Learn how IGEN has expanded training and education in clean energy technologies and is increasing employment opportunities, improving environmental and human health, and fostering community engagement while implementing clear career pathways.

Presenters:

  • Stephen Bell, Executive Director, Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN)
  • Sherry M. Burlingame, Ph.D., Career Pathways Project Director, College of Lake County
  • Jen Worth, Interim Associate Vice President, Workforce and Economic Development, American Association of Community Colleges

Community Colleges as Student Sustainability Living Laboratories: In partnership with the Security and Sustainability Forum (9/10/13)

As higher education institutions redesign and retrofit campuses in greener ways, many forward-thinking schools are using these projects as hands-on learning opportunities for students. These "living laboratories" merge academics and campus facilities management to provide students with real-world skills and, for the institution, a path to meet its sustainability goals. Community colleges, in particular, are leading the way, as they use living labs as a tool to completely revitalize education. Co produced by the SEED Center and the National Council on Science and the Environment.
